Amelia Island Dining Month: The Perfect Getaway
The one thing about September that nobody talks about enough: everybody’s back to school, back to work, back to their routines — and that means the beaches just opened back up for the rest of us. The crowds thin out, the pace slows down, and suddenly a coastal getaway feels a lot less like fighting for a parking spot and a lot more like actually enjoying yourself.
Amelia Island knows this. They even call September their “secret season” — all the good weather and island charm of summer, none of the chaos. This year they’re pairing that quiet with something great: Dining Month, a full 30 days of the island’s best restaurants rolling out special prix-fixe menus, chefs putting their best work on the table, with a portion of every meal benefiting the Barnabas Center, a local nonprofit doing real good for area families.
It’s also just a good excuse to get back into some kind of rhythm with eating — the good kind. Sitting down for a proper meal, trying something new, letting a chef show off a little. That’s a rhythm worth getting back into.
I don’t visit nearly as much as I’d like, but Amelia Island has been one of my favorite getaways for years. Two hours or less from Savannah. Depending on what part of town you are leaving from. Two hours. Close enough for an easy day trip or weekend, but it feels like a world away — barrier island quiet, water on both sides, a food scene that’s been quietly getting really good.
Back to school means the coast is ours again. Go enjoy it. For more information on Dining Month and how you can enjoy it click here.
