Beaufort’s Best-Kept Secret Is 100% Gluten-Free (And Nobody Can Tell)
If you haven’t heard of Pure Cafe and Bakery yet, you’re about to. Hidden away in Beaufort, South Carolina, this little shop has quietly become one of the most talked-about bakeries in the region — and the wild part is, it’s completely gluten-free, dairy-free capable, and nut-free. Not “mostly.” Not “gluten-friendly.” A hundred percent celiac-safe kitchen.
The story behind it is as good as the food. We spoke to owners Catherine, Tyler, and James for our podcast and learned that they didn’t set out to build an empire together — their paths just kept crossing at the right moments. Catherine had been running a gluten-free wholesale baking business for years, born out of her own health journey after a Crohn’s diagnosis forced her to rethink everything she ate. Tyler, a longtime coffee obsessive, met her at a local market and the two clicked instantly. Catherine had the baking skills down, James (her fiancé) is well versed in teas-and construction-Tyler had long held his vision for a coffee shop.
They opened softly in March, intentionally holding off on a big grand opening for two months while they nailed down their systems as a self-funded, owner-operated trio. Good call — word spread fast anyway. Customers are now driving in from Charlotte, Atlanta, even Kentucky, specifically because dedicated, truly safe gluten-free bakeries are still so hard to find.
On the menu, the blueberry muffins and carrot cake have near-cult followings already, alongside a seasonal coffee cake that rotates with what’s fresh (peach, when we visited). And don’t sleep on the coffee — Tyler sources from Hex Roasters in Charlotte and is meticulous to the gram about every batch, which comes through in every sip.
What makes PURE stand out isn’t just that it’s allergy-safe — it’s that it doesn’t taste like a compromise. That’s exactly the point Catherine’s spent a decade chasing.
“We don’t necessarily tell people we are 100 percent gluten free, because there is a misconception that it is supposed to taste some kind of way. Which is upsetting, because I like to think that we are breaking that mold here.” Catherine says.
