This quick chat falls directly into the “If you know, then you know” category and the island’s dessert options will be better for it.

The Purple Cow, a beloved brand on the island known for some of the best baked goods around, is making a return to a commercial storefront at 32 Office Park Road on the island’s South End.

I spent a few minutes with owner/baker Lisa Bernstein and her team on Wednesday in her new tiny space and the one thing that was more than apparent (besides the room of beautiful goodies) were the smiles. Smiles on everyone’s face, but particularly Lisa’s.

“This is exactly what I wanted.” She said “I knew I wanted a bigger kitchen at some point, but I wasn’t searching for one.”

The space is all production. There is no indoor seating. Service is provided via a walk up window with some tables and chairs outside. On busy days, I suspect those will fill up fairly quickly. This latest incarnation of The Purple Cow will largely be grab and go. Customers will have a selection to choose from on two adjacent chalk board menus that will undoubtedly ebb and flow depending on what is available that day.

The Purple Cow established itself as an island icon in 2015 in a brick and mortar space on Matthews Drive. Eventually Bernstein “Bernie” as she is known ’round here, moved to a new space on Pope Avenue. It was a large space that required a lot to keep it going. Bernie shut down there in 2022. She continued to operate, participating in Farmers Markets and filling special orders, but there was no storefront.

Now Bernie’s got her groove back with all the space she says she needs to make her regulars happy again. I’m sure they will be. I took a box home following my visit and everything I sampled as delicious as it has ever been.

She’ll be there Sundays through Wednesdays from 7am until 11am and 5pm until 10pm. Expect those hours to fluctuate a little as they get back into a swing of regular traffic, because there will be.
