912 Brew opens on East Broughton Street

As the Eastern Wharf project continues to grow in Savannah, it’s encouraging more businesses on East Broughton Street. Earlier this year, Java Burrito opened at 420 E Broughton, and now we can add 912 Brew to the growing roster of food and beverage options on that side of downtown.

Alex Brooks and Anissa Craig had worked together at another business. They became friends and soon realized they wanted to go into business for themselves.

“I always wanted to do a gift shop in the mountains,” said Alex.

Anissa said her dream was different but complementary. “I always wanted a restaurant but something small scale.”

They decided they could combine their dreams with 912 Brew, a coffee shop with a gift shop inside. It recently opened at 600 E Broughton Street right behind Thompson Chiropractic. In fact, it was through the chiropractor that Alex and Anissa found this location.

“[Alex] knew Amy [Dr. Thompson] from going to the chiropractor,” said Anissa. Dr. Thompson is the one who told them about the space next door opening up.

“I saw that courtyard and said,’ We’ll take it!'”

All their coffee is from Red Rooster Coffee which utilizes organic and Fair Trade coffee beans. Offering organic and small business products to customers was important to Anissa.

“All our syrups are organic and natural flavors, and everything I sell in the shop, or 99%, if I can find it organic, I do, but it’s also by other small businesses… Everything’s from small businesses with much of the same values: eco-friendly, employee-friendly, and all-natural products.”

“Even the chocolate is organic,” Alex added. “The cups are compostable, even the stuff that’s plastic is recycled. We offer bamboo utensils. There isn’t anything in here that’s run-of-the-mill.”

The original plan was to roast their own coffee, but then they stumbled across the Ground Control coffee brewer that brews such smooth coffee that they decided to hold off on roasting plans for now. They also offer organic non-coffee drinks from Tractor Beverage and baked goods from Auspicious Baking Company. Soon they will also add sandwiches to the menu.

Above everything, Alex and Anissa want to make sure customers at 912 Brew receive a personal and friendly experience. “I get disappointed with a lot of the places I go to eat,” said Anissa. “People don’t say hi or thank you. We just wanted a place that gives good service and offers something unique.”

Alex agreed. “You can come get your attitude adjusted [by us] and your body adjusted [next door].”
