Savannah’s Howlin’ Hound and Gottlieb’s Bakery both close

The nay sayers will always tell you growth comes at a cost. As our area continues to evolve as a tourist destination and desirable place to live, change is inevitable. Sometimes, places we enjoy are forced to go away. Such is the case with the closure of Midtown Savannah’s Howlin’ Hound eatery. The news made official by a note on their door thanking their customers for their loyalty.

“Thank you for 5 great years!” The note reads. “All good things must come to an end, as does our time here.”

The Howlin’ Hound was a very popular lunch spot at Eisenhower and Waters Avenues. A Facebook post on December 23rd announced they were taking a break until the new year.

“Our lease is about up.” said Kirk Blaine, Chef/Owner of Howlin Hound. “We decided to close after the holidays with many things to consider.”

“This comes from the demolition of the shopping center immediately behind us.” he said. “The shopping center is coming down and my lease is up in the Summer, I just didn’t feel like I should keep going there.”

“I have Castaways, The Grandview at Hotel Tybee, and Chef Kirk Blaine catering all running at full throttle and need to drop the anchor. The timing is right where i will not have to endure unsightly demo + construction at my back door, I will keep the building for the kitchen space for our catering services, where we have built a small empire. More food was going out of the back door of the Hound for catering than to the dining room anyway.”

Chef/Owner Kirk Blaine then asks his customers to please visit their other location in Sandfly, the very popular Castaways.

Meanwhile, Gottlieb’s Bakery has also closed their doors in the same shopping center. That situation is out of their hands, however, the Eisenhower Square Shopping Center is set for demolition in the near future. The search for a new location for Gottlieb’s Bakery has been underway for a while. There are no announcements yet.

The space has been vacated, the sign above the door removed at Gottlieb’s.

What we do know is that there will be a new modern shopping center going in to that same space. The kind of shopping center that could, for example, support a Trader Joe’s. Let the rumor mill swirl.

Gottlieb’s Bakery has also closed at Eisenhower Square

Both Howlin’ Hound and Gottlieb’s are part of the footprint in the same shopping center.

  1. Why doesn’t Savannah have a Dave and Buster’s? We have had several areas that could have provided much space for D&B but to no avail, we have much of nothing for our children, familes and guests who visits Savannah.

  2. Can’t say I’m not surprised. Howling Hound is great! I think it could be better if they were a sit down and order restaurant. The food is wonderful. However the service is awkward. If they made that one change I feel like it would make a world of difference. I hope you make a comeback.
