Great news for The Westin Savannah Harbor team, as they welcome new Executive Chef Steve Black to lead Aqua Star. We are big fans of this seafood kitchen and we anticipate great things to continue from the new chef!

The Westin Savannah Harbor is pleased to announce that Steve Black has accepted the title of Executive Chef.  Chef Black is excited to continue the tradition of culinary excellence and eager to propel the Resort’s Food and Beverage operations to new heights.

Chef Black will oversee the operation and culinary direction for Aqua Star Seafood Kitchen, Midnight Sun Bourbon & Craft Lounge, Escape Pool Bar & Grill, Champions Grill, and in-room dining.  Moreover, Chef Black is responsible for servicing the largest event, catering and group conference hotel in Savannah.

Chef Black attended Johnson & Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1986.  In 1990, Chef Black traveled abroad to Strasbourg, France where he had the opportunity to work with 3-Star Michelin Chefs Antoine Westermann, Emile Jung, Michel Husser & Fernand Mischler.

During his culinary career, Chef Black has been recognized as one of the leading chefs in San Diego.  In 2002, he received the Gold Medallion Award as Chef of the Year from the California Restaurant Association.   At the 2008 Gold Key Awards, he was nominated for the Food & Beverage Person of the Year by the San Diego Hotel & Motel Association.  He has been awarded with “Best Recipe” from Maple Leaf Duck Farms and Contessa Shrimp.

For over 20 years, Chef Black has catered the annual events for The Old Globe Gala, the RITZ, Jewel Ball, Patrons of The Prado, and numerous Fortune 500 companies.  He has participated in various major fundraisers for Meals on Wheels, Mama’s Kitchen and the Shiley Eye Institute. Chef Black has had the opportunity to cater to celebrities such as Richard Dreyfuss, Hal Holbrook & Dixie Carter, John Kerry, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, U.S. Senator Bob Dole and Mayor Jerry Sanders.

General Manager Mark Spadoni commented, “The Resort found the perfect candidate to champion the city’s finest seafood restaurant and help lead one of Savannah’s largest Food and Beverage departments. We are entering a new era for the Resort and Steve’s contributions will, in large part, help define our success.  He brings with him great energy, experience, and inspiring creativity.”

In his leisure time Steve is an avid fisherman who often finds the best catches on his Boston Whaler.  Chef Black shares his fishing stories and recipes as a regular contributor to bdoutdoors.com.
