The Start of Savannah’s Festival Season

Savannah's Festival SeasonIf you are familiar with the calendar around these parts, then you know that September typically marks the start of festival season. Not all that long ago, the festivities got started with the Savannah Jazz Festival in late September. We also have the Greek Food Festival, Jewish Food Festival, River Street’s Octoberfest, and then the Film Festival. In the last few years, however, the calendar has filled in beautifully around those long standing events. Beginning with what has developed into “Craft Brew Week”; leading up to the Craft Brew Festival on Labor Day weekend, the greater Savannah area has all kinds of things going on through November, really. I’ll leave the music and fashion to others, but just this weekend alone we have a handful of events that fit every sized budget to keep you busy, eating and liking. Allow me to share a quick guide:

  • Bistro Savoir Interactif at Savannah Technical College on Friday. I start with this event very simply because it is on Friday night as opposed to the weekend. This evening of great food is a part of the Savannah Food and Wine Festival’s activities. The event will feature six live action stations in the auditorium at Savannah Tech. Guests will be able to interact with chefs as they prepare each of those six courses. There will be wine pairings and a tremendous amount of food, of course. Sure to be a great time. The menu is available for viewing at savannahfoodandwinefest.com, as is a way to purchase tickets with 100% of the proceeds going to the Patrick Ansley Williams Scholarship Fund.  The event starts at 6:30pm.

  • Saturday is the 2nd Annual Pinpoint Seafood Festival. Pinpoint is a tiny community along Moon River, about twenty minutes from downtown Savannah. The area has a rich history created by the Gullah-Geechee community. Members of the Sweetfield of Eden Baptist Church decided to invite everyone out, not only to learn about the history of this settlement, but to offer a tour of the church and of course, eat some great seafood. Tickets (which include a tour of their museum) are only $5. There will be crab, shrimp, low country boil, music, and fun for kids.  All proceeds will go to Greenbriar’s Children Center in Savannah.

  • Those chefs aren’t going to be the only ones cooking over the next few days. I will be out this weekend showing off a few of my skills in the kitchen. Outdoor kitchen, that is. Join me, and some of my co-workers from WSAV-TV, as we get together to raise a bunch of money for Savannah AMBUCS. AMBUCS is a nationwide charity aimed at creating mobility and independence for people with disabilities. We’ll be at City Market, Saturday morning from 9am until 11am, having all kinds of fun. I’ll be on stage offering some healthy food options that the kids will enjoy, as well. (Yes, I’ll provide some samples).

  • Revival Fest is primarily a music event, but this year, they are boosting things up a bit on the food side. Friday night there will be a private concert at Pacci, inside the Brice Hotel. Saturday, Chef Roberto Leoci will be hosting a pig roast with an assortment of sauces to enjoy. Pork will be available for $8 per plate. Other food will be provided by Bayou Café. In addition to all of the fun with grub, several local and statewide breweries will be in attendance offering their beverages. Get you a jump on Oktoberfest. If it’s hot enough, try something from King of Pops. Wonderful treat right there.

  • Finally, I talked about it last week, but it is worth a little reminder. Farm Heritage Day at Hunter Cattle Company in Brooklet. It is a full day of fun on the farm. There will cooking demos, petting farms, a full blown lakeside grill, and several restaurants on display offering their great treats. It’s part educational but entertaining (live music, as well), and part relaxing day on the farm. Military and First Responders get in for half price. Can’t beat that. See you on TV.
