The Collins Quarter to Begin Dinner Service

The amount of new restaurants and good food that have come to call Savannah home in the last twelve months has been incredibly well documented. I’ve written about them, several other outlets in Savannah have written about them, blogs have blogged, photos have been posted, food has been shared. I’ve said it once and I will say it again, ten years from now, 2014 will likely go down as the year everything changed in Savannah. I mean on the food scene, of course. The first to open was The Florence on Victory Drive in June. Pacci, Treylor Park, and The Grey trickled in over the course of the year. But the one that kinda came out of nowhere, without a lot of pre-opening hype, was The Collins Quarter at the corner of Bull Street and Ogelthorpe.

Collins QuarterThe scene is beautiful. Arguably one of Savannah’s prettiest restaurant spaces. Depending on what you like, of course. The most used term, I think, when I take someone there is “big city coffee house.” Fair enough. The coffees are fantastic. The foods are equally as such. A menu on the small side, limited items. You won’t find a “Cheesecake Factory”  like encyclopedia of things to choose from. Owner, Anthony Debreceny, designed it that way from the start. The idea was to do a hand full of things for breakfast and lunch and do them well. The menu includes my personal favorite, “Morrocan Scrambler” with Mereguez Sausage, Ras al Hanout, Spiced Chickpeas and Beaufort Artisan Toast. Frankly, one of my favorite breakfast bites in Savannah.

“We wanted a place that appealed to everyone”, Anthony told me a while back during an interview for our TV show last fall. “You could have a SCAD student here working on a project and a business man having an important meeting over there and everyone feel equally as comfortable.”  That is probably the best way to describe it. Brekkie as he calls it, a lunch menu, and then of course Brunch. Primarily on weekends.

Collins QuarterThe Collins Quarter exploded on the Savannah food scene. Right out of the box, it wasn’t uncommon to wait 45-minutes to an hour for a table. Guests were doing it. It was that popular. The food is that good. The one thing that was missing though, was a dinner menu. Sure, Debreceny toyed with the idea of wine and live music here and there, but there was no food. I asked him no less than ten times when he was going to get dinner service going and every time he said, “Not until we can get it right.”

Well, it would appear they have gotten it right. The Collins Quarter will soon be opening for dinner.

Getting the right staffing in place was a challenge. Tweaking and getting the menu right, ultimately was the biggest one. One Monday morning as I stood on the sidewalk asking Debreceny when he’d open for dinner, a box was walked in by a delivery man. “Truffles”, he said pointing to the box that was making its way inside. “They just arrived from New York. We are going to play tonight.”

After literally months of tinkering, The Collins Quarter is finally preparing to begin dinner service. I haven’t gotten a look at the menu, but I can only guess it will be diverse, creative and flavorful. The breakfast and lunch menus are precisely so. One thing you can practically count on is attention to detail “I demand it”, Debreceny tells me. “I’d hate for someone to finally come in and not have an enjoyable experience because that is the one time we didn’t get it right”, he adds. The precise date for the beginning of dinner service is a moving target, but they are closer

Kiss A PigSo why the hype about a Savannah restaurant opening for dinner? Well, because Eat It and Like It can offer you an exclusive preview. Yes, exclusive. How so? Well, I thought you’d never ask.

The Collins Quarter is hosting a dinner for us as part of our Kiss-A-Pig Campaign to benefit the American Diabetes Association on Wednesday, April 29th. It’s one of five events we are holding across the area and you are welcome to join us for a peek at what their dinners might look like. It’s a three course price fixe menu with a wine pairing. Cost is $55 per person plus tax and gratuity. There will be two seatings that day, 6:30pm and 8:30pm.  You can call the restaurant for reservations. We will very likely sell out.  When you think about it, it’s a fantastic deal and all proceeds go to Team Eat It and Like It and the ADA.

CLICK HERE for more on our Kiss-A-Pig Campaign and what we are doing to raise money. There are other dinners going on, maybe you’d like to join us for more than one. This one at The Collins Quarter is going to be fantastic.

See you on TV.
