Sundae Café on Tybee Island

My best friend Traci visits Savannah from Atlanta many times throughout the year. It’s tradition for us to celebrate her birthday at Sundae Café on Tybee Island, her favorite restaurant in the Savannah area. Our group of seven revelers dined at Sundae Café and as usual, we were not disappointed!

Sundae Café is a family-owned restaurant and a former ice cream deli.  By day, the atmosphere has a beachy, casual feel with locals enjoying a laid-back lunch. At night, it becomes a white tablecloth, fine-dining establishment.  Dress is casual, day or night.  Reservations are highly recommended for dinner.  Sundae Café is easy to find with it being right on Hwy 80 across from the Sugar Shack.

Our group of six women and one man (lucky him!) immediately ordered a variety of cocktails, beer and wine.  Sundae Café has a full bar and extensive specialty martini list, a decent wine list and a variety of domestic and import brews.  I highly recommend the Cucumber Martini (order it on the rocks).  It’s very refreshing at only $8. Our server brought out fresh homemade bread with warm garlic olive oil and it was devoured in minutes.  My Chop Salad satisfied my cravings with its crunchy texture of almonds, cashews, sesame sticks, sunflower and pumpkin seeds at only $6.95. Traci swears her Caesar Salad was the best she’s ever had.  After our salads and appetizers, the table filled with a variety of entrees including Sweet & Spicy Pistachio Crusted Tuna, Bacon Wrapped & Crab Stuffed Jumbo Shrimp, Shrimp & Grits, Bleu Cheese Filet Mignon, and Jambalaya Pasta. My Shrimp & Grits consisted of blackened shrimp andouille sausage with cheddar cheese grits finished with a cracked pepper cream sauce and served with okra and tomatoes.  This isn’t a typical soupy shrimp and grits; rather, it’s hearty with a nice presentation. If you like New Orleans’ style flavors with a spicy kick, Sundae Café’s Shrimp & Grits is a must!

Entrees are hefty in portion and range in price from $16.95 to $28.95. Our server Amy was very attentive without being bothersome. Service was top-notch all around. Sundae Café’s only drawbacks are limited parking and the unassuming exterior nestled between a liquor store and a gas station convenience store.  What awaits you behind Sundae Café’s humble store front location are some of the most tantalizing seafood and steak entrees on the Georgia Coast. Their peanut butter pie and other homemade desserts are a nice way to end your meal.  Sundae Café is a cozy spot to dine with friends, with family, on a romantic date, to celebrate a special occasion or to simply go for a great meal on quirky Tybee Island, Georgia!
