Southern BBQ

Sandfly BBQThis is one of those topics where I need to wear a football helmet before we air it.  Like burgers and wings, BBQ is quite possibly the most subjective topic in the South. I made sure to address that very issue more than once in the episode. My favorite may not be yours, yours may not be mine and that doesn’t make either one of us wrong.  We could do five shows on BBQ and not hit all the hot spots in the Savannah, Hilton Head area. There is so much good BBQ. We only hit on a few. Here they are, in the order they aired.

Scott’s BBQ – Hemingway, SC:  What a treasure this place is. Hardly discovered by us. They’ve been on the national map for quite some time. We decided to include them and tell their story. Quite a story it is. Rodney Scott and his BBQ were a part of the Savannah Food and Wine Festival last year. Great great spot. Cash only.

Sandfly BBQ – Savannah, GA:  Savannahians know Sandfly all too well. Great BBQ and winner of the 2014 Foodie Award for best in town. We love it. They now have a 2nd location in Savannah’s Victorian District just off of downtown Savannah. Old 1930’s dining car. Quite a treat. And the food is great too. Also try the duck fat fried chicken finger sandwich!

Bluffton BBQ – Bluffton, SC:  Bluffton BBQ was referred to me by a friend who spends part of her time in Old Town Bluffton. I try to stop in whenever I can. Don’t ask Ted about his “style” of BBQ. “I cook it the way I like it” is about it. He has one sauce, “Ted’s Red” (for sale at $8 a jar), and it is wonderful. When he runs out, he runs out. Closed Mondays and Tuesdays.

Southern Soul BBQSouthern Soul Barbeque – St. Simons Island, GA:  These guys don’t need any kind of publicity. They are the most popular BBQ, if not restaurant, in the state. And worth every bit of it. They have the most variety of anyone we featured. Chicken, Turkey, Brisket, all of it. The stuff I tried was fantastic. People from all over America travel long hours to eat here, and it’s just down the road for us. We met a couple while we were there filming this show who carries their Grandson’s Godzilla doll around the world with them. Yes, Godzilla. They take photos of Godzilla wherever they are. This day, their Grandson got a photo of Godzilla eating BBQ. Long lines. Expect a wait, but again, worth every second.

  1. Where is the 2nd Sandfly location and is it open yet? I looked for mention of it on the websites and cannot find a thing. We’ll be in Savannah soon and want to try them out as we haven’t eaten there yet!

  2. Hi Kelly! It is at the intersection of Barnard and West Henry Streets in Savannah’s Downtown Victorian District. A little over a mile from the heart of downtown Savannah. Hope that helps!
