Sandfly BBQ in Downtown Savannah

You got the impression from talking to Keith Latture that he knew he could be doing a lot more with his BBQ and fabulous side dishes than he was in his “off the beaten path” location for Sandfly BBQ. You see, the locals all know how good this Memphis style lip-smackin’ goodness is, and even some tourists. It’s not uncommon to hear about tourists who have gone in search of this BBQ joint, tucked away in a strip mall near Savannah’s famed Wormsloe Historic Site. “We get them here sometimes”, Keith says. “They find out about us on Trip Advisor or somewhere else online and come look for us while they are in Savannah.”

Sandfly BBQKeith shared that for quite some time that he was looking for another spot. Nothing was the right fit. A couple of properties were overpriced, others not exactly what he was looking for. To his credit, he was patient. Waited for what seemed like forever. Every time I saw him, I asked him about it.

“When are you going to expand?”

“Hopefully, soon.”

Gotta love stock answers.

The wait is now over and if you live or spend any amount of time visiting or working in downtown Savannah you are in for a treat. Sandfly BBQ is about to open its second location in the old Streamliner Diner on Barnard and Henry Streets.

“Cameron Cheney, formerly of Tybee Fish Camp and B. Tillman is going to run things for us there”, Keith tells me.  “We are hoping to do some pop-up restaurant type things there after BBQ hours on the weekends”, he adds. “I think it’s gonna be a lot of fun.”

The menu will be essentially the same as Sandfly BBQ’s original location “except for a few of the sides because of space”, Keith says. “Once we are licensed we will also have a great selection of craft brews”.  If we are lucky, their Duck Fat Fries will be on the new menu. They are phenomenal. I’m going to go out on a limb and say the Mac ‘n Cheese (which is some of my favorite in Savannah) will be there. You can see Sandfly BBQ’s menu here.

Sandfly BBQQuick back story on Keith Latture…
He is a formally trained fine dining chef and originally came to Savannah in part to open Local 11ten. Local is still going strong, but Keith decided to take over his family’s BBQ spot. He is from the Memphis area and grew up on solid BBQ, so it was a good fit. Years back he told me he enjoyed the entire process and used his training to make some fun, creative side dishes. Yes, in addition to traditional collards and the whole nine.

This is going to be a fantastic addition to downtown Savannah’s already blossoming food scene. There are choices for BBQ downtown, but none as good as Sandfly in my book.  Cameron Cheney on board is a bonus. He was the winner of the Eat It and Like It 2014 Iron Chef Challenge. The man can cook. This should be a good time all the way around.

See you on TV.

  1. There is a new BBQ restaurant in Savannah, at the old Coffee Bluff BBQ location called B’s Cracklin’ BBQ! They are cooking up Carolina Style BBQ, with Mustard based sauce, Hash, Greens, the best Mac n cheese, and they are the only restaurant in Savannah, smoking Whole hogs! I think they should be featured on Eat it and like it!
