Random Ruminations

If you missed it earlier this week, there is a new cafe coming to Broughton Street.  Dept. 7 East is going in the old Tea Room spot near Bull Street (7 East).  I am told their sandwiches are wonderful.  The pimento cheese fantastic as well.  Look for them to open very soon.

Taco Abajo’s run on Broughton Street appears to have come to an end.  The basement space is locked up with signs on the door from a beverage company staking claim to some of the equipment inside.  I’m told the owner has a sky high pile of debt.  If only the food hadn’t been so bad.  Funny how that happens.

Season 3 of Eat It and Like It rolls on.  Sunday morning’s episode is on the Bed and Breakfast life in Savannah.  For a preview click here.

Another new place has signs up, if only on the inside.  A new restaurant called “Granite” is going in on the corner of Drayton and Liberty Streets.  Southeast corner.  We are looking into the concept and will keep you posted.

One more closing, over the river.   Celebrity Chef Robert Irvine’s “Eat!” on Hilton Head Island is for sale according to this advertisement.  It can be yours for a security deposit of $50,000.  Irvine has moved from the Low Country to the Tampa area and hasn’t been a regular presence at Eat! for quite some time.  The ad says the restaurant will close at the end of January.

Our newsletter is growing so fast, it keeps me up at night.  What newsletter does that?  Twice a month we keep you up to date on the food scene in the area.   click here to sign up Bottom right corner.  No spam.  I promise or double your money back.

Had lunch at Belford’s, City Market in Savannah.  Chances are you haven’t been to Belford’s in a long time.  My advice?  Give it another shot.  New chef Christopher Adgate is working hard to change the perception that space has had for a long time.  The scallops with corn jus and field peas alone (pictured above) suggest he is doing something right.

More new: A restaurant called “Bubba’s BBQ” is going into the old Blowin’ Smoke BBQ space on MLK in Savannah.  I’m told it’s a group from Atlanta putting it together.  It’s 5th incarnation in just over a year.  Good luck.

Savannah Food and Wine Festival is right around the corner.  I’ve been harping on it for weeks.  Don’t wait until the last minute for tickets.  Some of the better events will be sold out.  Cooking classes with Chef Hugh Acheson?  Wine dinners all over town.  They will fill up.  Book em now.  Take a look at the line up here.

If you get over to Hilton Head much, you’ve probably heard of Palmetto Bay Sunrise Cafe If you haven’t tried it, you should.  One of the best breakfasts on the island.  How good?  95% of the time there is a wait.  2 minutes to 45 minutes.  Not only do people wait, but it is very much worth it.  Open until 2:00pm during the week.  3:00pm on weekends.  I promise you will Eat It and Like It.
