Random Ruminations January 11th

##We told you the day after Christmas that Chef Darin Sehnert was leaving 700 Drayton Cooking School inside of the The Mansion on Forsyth Park.  He’s leaving to open his own cooking school.  Something he tells me he had been working on for about 3 years.  We are very excited, not only for Darin, but for Savannah.  Getting people to stay here and try new things are key in helping our cities culinary scene to grow.

##What of the cooking school at 700 Drayton.  An extensive search is underway.  I am told they are “Interviewing renowned candidates with exceptional culinary talent” to fill that position.  I am also told the interview process is pretty intense.  They clearly are not looking for just another person who can cook.  I’ll keep you posted.

##Reminder that Iron Chef 2014 is coming to the Southern Women’s Show on February 23rd.  12:30pm.  We had a great time last year.   Save the date and be sure to join us.

##Have you tried Department 7 East, the newest eatery on Broughton Street in Savannah?  The Eat Squad did.  What did they think?  Click here to find out.

##Speaking of ‘have you tried?’ I have yet to, but I am getting fantastic early returns from the new doings at SOHO South Cafe on Liberty Street.  A review is coming soon, but click here to see what they’ve done with the space.  Beautiful.

##Sign up for our newsletter.  Twice a month we keep you up to date on all the food doings in and around town.

##Papillote, the carry out (or dine in) French cafe on Broughton Street now delivers.

##Look for some new and very exciting things coming to Cafe Jepson inside the Jepson Center Museum (Admission not required to eat one of Savannah’s best lunches).

##All quiet on the Hugh Acheson front.  Last we heard they were looking at opening The Florence (Victory and Whitaker) on April 1st.  I have a call in to them.  I’ll keep you posted.

##I just have to share.  I spent 4 days in Los Angeles recently.  For those of you that have spent any time there, is it even possible to find bad Mexican food in Southern California?  My goodness.  If you have plans to head out there soon, keep Loteria Grill on your short list.  Nothing short of phenomenal.   As was BOA Steakhouse in West Hollywood.  (yeah, you know me.)

I have a TON more news to share, but I will save it for next time.

See you on TV,

Jesse
