Random Ruminations

  • America turns another year older, that means a few things in Savannah, including the Leopold’s Ice Cream’s “I Pledge for Ice Cream.” Any child, 12 and under, who can recite the pledge of allegiance gets a free scoop of ice cream. Not every day, Mondays in July from 4pm-7pm. See you there.
  • If you have yet to try The Wild Dock and Bar in Savannah, you don’t know what you are missing. Located in the old Bonna Bella Yacht Club location, everything has gotten a much needed makeover. The grounds, the seating and the menu. Fantastic spot for great bites to eat.
  • If you missed my column last week, you might want to take a look at what the AquaCurean Seafood and Spirits Festival has in store for year two at The Westin Savannah Harbor. It’s a fantastic event at a great price. Early bird ticket through July 31st are available for $65.00.

  • Construction has resumed at The Vault on Bull Street in Savannah’s Victorian District. The space is the latest effort from Sean and Ele Tran, owners of several area restaurants including Ele, Tangerine, Chive Sea Bar and Lounge and King and I. Ele tells me construction was only delayed about three months, and they are hoping to be in business by late September. The space will feature outdoor seating and a “marketplace” for grab and go sandwiches, sushi and other things.
  • Grilling corn next weekend or this summer for that matter? I found this link incredibly helpful. I can taste it already.
  • There’s a new chef and a new approach at Rocks on the River inside the Bohemian Hotel on Bay Street. I had lunch there recently and was wowed their Scallop with Quinoa and Tomato Relish dish. Sound fantastic? It was. Healthy and delicious too. The Grilled Peach Salad deserves a mention as well. Check out their lunch menu here.
  • New kid on the block downtown Savannah is CO. A Vietnamese eatery on Whitaker Street near Bay. The bar upstairs is already one of the best kept secrets in town. The food? Our Eat Squad has a review coming this week.
  • Here is another great resource for 20 Summer pastas that look so good, I may try to make them all by the time the kids go back to school.
  • Planning ahead, the guys at Circa 1875 are planning a heck of a party for Bastille Day. In fact, they are celebrating Bastille Week! They will have $5 specialty cocktails, champagne and other treats and a huge seafood display for you to enjoy. Oysters, Lobster, Clams and Shrimp are only part of it. They say it will be totally casual and a whole lot of fun on the bar side of their space on Whitaker Street in Downtown Savannah.
  • Sisters has a new program they are calling “Sisters After Dark” from 8pm until midnight they will have live music and great food (Best Fried Chicken Foodie Award Winner). It will be upstairs at their Skidaway location. Give them a call for more information.
