Whirlwind Tour…

I took a long weekend.  Part business, part pleasure.  Truth be told, when it comes to Eat It and Like It, business is always a pleasure.  (Well, 99% of the time, but that’s just life).   Rather than give a long, drawn out rambling thing about my travels, I am going to go day by day.  The fun, the road and the great eats.

Day One –Savannah to Atlanta

I had an appointment early afternoon in Atlanta, ahead of my thrill of a lifetime.  I drove up there by myself to see Van Halen in concert.  The opening act?  Kool and the Gang.  Fifty minutes of classics!  They opened with “Fresh”…moved through “Get down on it”, “Hollywood Swingin”, and wrapped up with “Ladies Night” and “Celebration”.  I thought I was going to lose my voice and that was just the warm up group.   Van Halen (with David Lee Roth) took the stage and just blew us away for ninety minutes.   Look, I know these guys are old, but they rocked and rolled like you wouldn’t believe.  I hope to have that kind of energy when I reach that age.  Thrill of a lifetime, seriously.  First time in my life I knew every lyric and every song for both the warm up band and headliner.  That was pretty cool.

Day Two –Atlanta to Savannah

I high-tail it back to Savannah for a day “off” if you want to call it that.  Most of my time revolved around getting ready for Friday night’s concert in Forsyth Park.  I drove out to Sandfly BBQ to visit Chef Keith out there.   I was introduced to Sandfly BBQ when we shot the BBQ episode of Eat It and Like It.  Don’t know that I can say it is my favorite, but I just fell in love with those Memphis style ribs.  Ugh…my mouth is watering right now.  They are SOOOOOOO good.  It definitely worth a drive out there if you have never had them.  Picked up some ribs, pulled pork mac n cheese and greens and we were headed to Forsyth on a picture perfect Friday night…the Charlie Daniels Band and Little Big Town.  It was funny because a good number of people thought Charlie Daniels was the headliner.  I had people asking me after the entire show was over when Charlie Daniels was going to play.  Ooopsie.  Snooze, you lose.  Charlie took the stage first.  Little Big Town was great.  They even made a Lady Gaga song country.  Try THAT on for size!

Day Three –Savannah to Santa Rosa Beach, Florida

One very early wake up call and 440 or so miles later the Eat It and Like It crew was on the beach at The Watercolor Resort in Florida.  Highway 30A is a tiny stretch of beachfront road between Panama City and Destin.  Along it, some of the best food in the state. Casual and fine dining.  Some of the most beautiful homes, and certainly some of the most beautiful dunes and beaches.

Dinner that night?  Overlooking the ocean as the sun set? Wow, just wow.  I want to say it was something like 6 courses.   Great wine and a beautiful venue.  What did we have?  Fried peanuts.  In the shell.  They were dusted with kind of a Cajun spice afterward.  But you just popped them in your mouth whole.  Shells and all.  The shell disappeared in your mouth.  A non-factor.  They were wonderful.  As was the fried okra.  Cut lengthwise and flash fried.  Best I have ever had.  Truthfully, I am not a big fan of fried okra because it’s too heavy and fried.  But this was perfect.  They were like puffs in your mouth.  Delicious.

Two fish plates:  Grouper on a bed of asparagus puree, corn meal pasta and herb butter.  Then a Snapper with clams, grilled squid and roasted tomatos in a white wine type broth.  We were in heaven.  Last course was a sliced pork chop on Anson Mill grits and then….dessert.  Dessert.  Dessert.  Dessert.  I am weak in the knees.

We got three desserts and passed them around round-robin.  The favorite by faaaarrrr was the Carrot Cake and Key Lime Cheesecake tower with hazelnut ice cream.  Followed by a Chocolate-Pretzel Torte with Guinness ice cream on top.  We also got a Citrus Cream dessert with orange slices and orange sorbet on top.  They were all amazing, but that Carrot Cake will be talked about for years.

Day Four –Santa Rosa Beach to Savannah

Before heading out on that 440 mile road trip back we stopped back in for breakfast.  The menu was pretty straight forward for breakfast.  But it did have a few twists.  Their signature dish is a Rice Krispy coated French Toast which we were told is so popular that it is often requested to be shipped to Atlanta for families there on Mother’s Day or other holiday events.  It was eye-rolling good.  I had an Andoullie Sausage omlette with green pepper, onions and cheese.  Perfect potatoes and a fluffy biscuit.  Seriously, one of the best omlettes I have ever had and have put down a few in my time.

All this sound good to you?  Stuffed yet?  It was all incredible.  You’ve seen BBQ already on our show and I absolutely cannot wait to share the rest.  And we will.  In a future episode of Eat It and Like It.

Thanks for stopping by the blog.

See you on TV.

Jesse
