Enjoying the SFWF on a Budget

Savannah Food & Wine FestIf I had my way, I would rename the title of this article to “A Thrifty Persons Guide to Enjoying the Savannah Food & Wine Festival”, because even if I were swimming in my lap pool of $20’s and $100’s, I know I would still find myself working to find the balance between luxury and economy, employing the philosophy of “Quality, not Quantity” as a way of life. So for this reason, I write this to all you thrifty people out there.

This year’s Festival is no different for me, to enjoy the breath that the festival has to offer without feeling spent, both physically and yes, financially. I liken going to a Food & Wine Festival with a golf tournament. You gear up to do a whole lot of walking, standing around, and mingling, the only difference (albeit the tasty difference) is you get to partake in the culinary delights that Savannah has to offer. For the thrifty minded, I’m going to suggest three events and one splurge that will leave you feeling like you enjoyed the festival, without feeling like you missed something because you didn’t do it ALL.

Event Number One: Take a Class! Mansion on Forsyth Park/700 Cooking School $55pp AM – $85pp PM

700 Drayton ClassesWhat better way to start off your week long culinary experience than by diving in, head first. Instead of picking up a tasty treat from a server’s tray, why not make one yourself. These three hour classes are NOT, I repeat NOT, for those only with cooking experience. No need to feel intimidated because you only know how to boil water. Wherever you are in your culinary expertise, you will walk out feeling like you might actually know more than you walked in with. Great Wine, wonderful conversation, and enjoying the fruits of your labor sounds like a great way to experience food in Savannah. My recommendation…take the PASTA class.

Oh, and tell the chef I sent you.

Event Number Two: Taste of Savannah (Gotta do it!) $55 pp/General Admission – $95 pp/VIP Lounge

It’s one of the reasons why you’re here. The Taste of Savannah is a tented affair where you will dress up to be seen, to taste, and to sip. It’s where you will most likely be bumping into your neighbor, a business associate, and perhaps an old flame (yikes). All while tasting the best that the restaurants and wineries have to offer. An informal stroll, both for the introvert and extrovert, you can enjoy at your own pace, or move along with a crowd. With a stage set for local and celebrated chef demonstrations, you will never be without something (or someone) to see (or to taste) at the Taste of Savannah.

Event Number Three: Meet the Winemakers (Friday, Nov. 14, 2014 at 7:30 PM) $25.00 pp

Wine MakersSure, you might be a wine connoisseur, you might even have been to a vineyard or two in your day, but when was the last time you got to sit down to MEET the artists and craftsmen who devote their lives to making sure you enjoy what you are drinking? We live in Savannah, where you almost can’t help but bump into a fledgling artist or perhaps a celebrated one, walking down the street. Making wine is an art and until you hear it from the artisan’s mouth, you will never fully be able to appreciate just how it got from the vine to your glass. If you enjoy wine, you must sit with these men and women and listen to the music that is their craft. I assure you, you will leave with a much deeper appreciation the next time you pop a cork.

The Big Splurge: A Wine Dinner!  (See here for list – http://www.savannahfoodandwinefest.com/wine-dinners.html)

If you’ve never attended a wine dinner, let me tell you, it’s like a wedding reception, where everyone is sitting together for the purpose of celebration. In this case, the event that you are celebrating is eating delicious food with a selected wine. A marriage of sorts. You might not know the person you’re sitting with, but because you have a shared interest and affection for the two who have come together, you relax and enjoy the time spent in party mode. A wine dinner is like that, except you don’t have to bring a gift! TRUST me, if you have a chance, a wine dinner is the perfect place to end your Festival experience!

To all of you…Bon Appétit!
