Eat It and Like It with Jesse Blanco – Pizza

Thanks so much for joining us for another high-calorie edition of Eat It and Like It with Jesse Blanco. There is a lot of pretty good pizza out there. Everyone typically has a favorite of two they like to call on when they are in the mood for a good pie. Here are the spots we visited in this episode, in the order they appeared.

Nonna Picci – Statesboro’s new kid on the pizza block is outstanding. Like we said on the show, we didn’t expect much from a new pizza spot in a college town, but it is obvious the people behind this operation have their eyes on the bigger picture. All you need to do, really, is look at their website to see that this place is different. It most definitely is. The dough is not only made from scratch, but fermented for up to 48 hours to give it a quality bite and flavor. Their pastas, including meat lasagna using Hunter Cattle ground beef, are exceptional as well. The prices are great too.

Two Brothers Pizza – No websites, no online ordering, not too many frills. Solid jersey style pizza. Joel Cordero is a self taught (with a little help from sound friends in New Jersey). Worked his way up over 30 years from dishwasher to owner. He tells us his wings might be his most popular. Last Super Bowl Sunday he sold 3,000. He is generally closed on Sundays, but does up for the big game. The pizzas? All hand made and taste like it. Best pizza you’ve ever had? No, but darn good for a neighborhood spot just off of Pooler Parkway. Very much worth searching them out if you have some shopping to do at the Outlet Malls.

Riverboat Pizza – Our favorite quote in the episode came from Jon Lyle. “The first year was tough. We probably had no business opening a restaurant.” Hard work paid off. 4 years later, Riverboat Pizza has made quite a name for itself on Highway 17 near Georgetown. All of the pies are good, The “Bangkok Nights” is one of the best pizzas in the county. Period. Housemade peanut sauce as a base, diced chicken, mozzarella, red onion and cilantro. Perfect balance and delicious.
