Eat It and Like It – Shefood

Our “Shefood” episode is a classic case of it sometimes taking a couple of years to get a show on the air. In this case, I’m pretty sure it was more than two years. The first time Eat It and Like It Co-Founder Senea Crystal mentioned doing something with female chefs was easily that long ago. We started a search for the right fit and really couldn’t find what we were looking for. It wasn’t until we found that group of ladies in Charleston early Summer of 2015 that we thought we had exactly what we were looking for and could move forward.

I am not a woman, obviously. I can never know the challenges that they face in American kitchens. If you spend any time reading about the topic, then you can see it is actually worse outside of the United States. The number of women in charge of restaurants just doesn’t hold up to any kind of national standard. Sarah Adams, co-founder of Bad Bitches Charleston, did make a valid point that younger chefs are seeing things differently and involving women in many new facets of the culinary world. It’s certainly a good trend. I do believe it will be better ten years from now. It’s a shame we have to wait ten years.

Mashama Bailey is one of Savannah’s shining stars right now. Her restaurant, The Grey, is a model of consistency. The best in Savannah? I’m not comfortable with those titles. Best for you, may not be best for me, and vice versa. The Grey is setting a new standard in this city, that is for sure and well worth a visit if you haven’t been there yet.

Bad Bitches Charleston are an amazing group. I actually found them on Twitter believe it or not, back in May. Their story, their cause and their passion are just fantastic. They do one dinner per month in Charleston and have taken their show on the road. Their last dinner was in Nashville, Tennessee. They’ve started a scholarship drive. Learn more about that by clicking here

The ladies have done all kinds of themes for their dinners. They even pulled off a market dinner where all food and drink came from a Charleston Farmer’s Market. Fantastic concept that will only continue to grow.

We sure hope you enjoyed this episode. Different, yes. But I had an absolute blast putting it together.

See you on TV.

Jesse
